Why Etobicoke Homeowners Ask About Cabinet Refinishing
Etobicoke sits in West Toronto, about 20 minutes from our shop on Ardwick Boulevard in North York. When a kitchen there starts to look tired, the question is usually whether the whole room has to come out. In most cases it does not. The carcasses in most kitchens are sound, and what dates a kitchen is the colour and the finish on the doors. Our kitchen cabinet refinishing changes exactly that, without pulling the room apart.
What Is Included in a Refinishing Job
Every cabinet job we quote follows the same sequence, whether it is a small galley kitchen or a larger one with an island.
Labelled and removed
Every door and drawer front is numbered before it comes off, so each one returns to the opening it came from.
Degreased and sanded
Kitchen doors carry cooking grease, even when they look clean. Skipping this step is the most common reason refinished cabinets peel, so we never shortcut it.
Primed and sprayed
A bonding primer goes on first, then finish coats are sprayed rather than brushed. The doors are sprayed off site, so the finish lays down flat with no brush marks along the rails and stiles.
Rehung
Hardware is refitted, doors are adjusted to sit evenly, and the frames are cut in to match the new finish. Hinges and hardware go back exactly where they came from.
Choosing a Colour
Many people refinishing cabinets want to move away from dark wood or an older finish. The directions we see most often include a crisp white, a warm neutral, charcoal, a muted blue, or a natural grain look. If you already have a shade in mind, colour matching works from a chip, a lid or a sample you already have, so a kitchen in Etobicoke can sit comfortably beside the rooms around it.
Living in the Kitchen While We Work
Mostly, yes. While the doors are away being sprayed, the openings are bare for a few days, but the kitchen stays usable. That is a very different experience from a full kitchen replacement, where the room can be out of use for much longer.
When Refinishing Is Not the Right Call
It depends on what the doors are made of and what is on them now. Tell us about your cabinets over the phone and we will say honestly whether refinishing is the right call or whether replacement makes more sense. If you are weighing both options, our earlier post on refinishing or replacing kitchen cabinets goes through the decision step by step.
